And the nominees are...

The Oscar nominations are in!  And surprise, surprise "The King's Speech" tops the noms.  I haven't seen this movie yet but can't wait to see it.  I have loved Colin Firth's work in almost everything I've seen him in so it doesn't surprise me that the Academy (and evidently every other major award giving body) is acknowledging him for this performance.

Then, of course, there's "Black Swan".  I tried desperately to go see this film at TIFF in September but given the buzz around it then and now, I should not have been surprised to find it sold out.  For those of you that know me, it shouldn't be shocking that I would want to see a ballet thriller, psycho-drama.   Natalie Portman, like Mr. Firth, is just awesome and has been for years.  While the majority of my age group in high school and early university were going on about current hearthrobs and the Lindsay Lohan's of the day, I loved Natalie and her talent.  So it's really about time she wins!

Now when it comes to the actual Best Picture category, I have a hard time playing favourites.  I loved "The Social Network" and "Inception" blew my mind like everyone else.  And the Academy loves true story dramas so "127 Hours" could take it too. I also haven't seen "Toy Story 3" but I love the fact that an animated feature made the list.  Perhaps Woody and Buzz deserve it too.

It's a hard call but one that I enjoy getting into every year.  At least there aren't any blue, cat-eyed people this year.

Happ creating!

  1. You have to see The King's Speech — it's a performance-driven picture, so I think it's right up your alley.

And woman, get on Toy Story 3 already. Don't make me come over there and force you to watch it. Don't even...

I did a post about the Oscars too, but I looked at whether a woman deserved to be nominated (especially after last year's win by Kathryn Bigelow). Curious to see if you think any women should have been nominated?

(As an example, The Kids Are All Right is up for best picture, but not director.)

Anyways, enough pimping for me. Go see The King's Speech. I know you have more time now.

  2. I always find it weird when a film is nominated for best picture but the director isn't. Doesn't the director's vision guide the film? I know TV is a producer's medium but thought film was supposed to be different.

As much as I love seeing women nominated, I still firmly believe that anyone nominated needs to deserve it, regardless of their gender, race, etc etc. It's just not right to honour someone who's work doesn't merit it. And I think most artists would agree on that point.

And I promise to see Toy Story 3!!! And King's Speech! I want to knock off as many Best Pic nominees as possible before the show!

  3. I actually wasn't impressed with The King's Speech. I went in expecting to be blown away considering all the hype surrounding it, but the movie just wasn't all that great, especially when you compare it to the other nominees this year like Black Swan and Inception. My favorite, though, was 127 Hours. If you haven't seen that one yet, you totally need to! James Franco gave one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, and he definately deserves the Oscar over Collin Firth.

Like you, I'm also surprised when a Best Picture nominee in contention for the title doesn't also get a Best Director nod. Danny Boyle really got snubbed this year, if you ask me, because he did a phenomenal job making such a simple story come to life with so much complexity.

  4. Thanks Film Conquerer! I've always like James Franco and he will always be James Dean in my mind because of the bio pic he did a few years ago.
